11.6.1899, place of birth unknown. por pil. In the CWGC Register he is described as a First Officer (not as a Flying Officer, as in the 1952 Polish Wykaz). A First Officer in the ATA was the RAF equivalent of a Flight Lieutenant. At the time of his death he was serving in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). He was killed when Beaufighter X7764 crashed near Dungavel. The ATAs function included the ferrying of aircraft from factories and maintenance units to the squadrons and storage units. The Commission records that during the whole war period 156 members of the ATA lost their lives. The ATA was formed in 1940. His memorial follows the British pattern of war grave memorial. CWGC web link - http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2455732/CZYZEWSKI,%20STEFAN Son of Jan Konstanty and Roberta Krzyszkowska; husband of Janina Czyzewska. He lived in Racecourse Road in Ayr. The website www.raf-lichfield.co.uk/ATA%20Casualties.htm records that he was with 18 MU and flew against a hill out of cloud and crashed at Glenyard Hill, Auchingilloch, Ayrshire. |
