In a ceremony on December 11th 1997, at 16 Arden Street, on the third anniversary of the General's death and in the presence of the Consul General of the Republic of Poland, Mr Leszek Wieciech, former soldiers of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, members of the Polish community, with the City of Edinburgh represented by The Lord Provost of Edinburgh the plaque was unveiled by the General's son - Dr Andrzej Maczek. The General was one of the distinguished Polish commanders of the last war. |
MILITARY CAREER: WORLD WAR TWO - A BRIEF REVIEW The General was born near Lwów in 1892. He was commander of the 1st Polish Armoured Division from February 1942 until May 1945. He then became GOC Ist Polish Corps in Scotland and later GOC Polish Forces in Great Britain. He saw service in the campaigns in Poland in 1939 and France in 1940 as the commander of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade. He was given command of the 1st Polish Armoured Division which he started to form in February 1942 in Scotland. In the campaigns in N.W. Europe the Division fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. |

THE GRAVE OF GENERAL MACZEK IN BREDA He died in Edinburgh in 1994, aged 102 and is buried in Breda, Holland. The grave of General Maczek in Breda (ext link to Dutch web site)
THE DUTCH REMEMBER Celebrations to mark the 68th anniversary of liberating Breda by the 1st Polish Armoured Division commanded by General Stanisław Maczek were held in Breda on October 27, 2012. Click here to visit Polish Ministry of National Defence site which features photographs of the event.
